For the first time, an African American is a presidential nominee for a major party.  It is the first that two sitting senators are in the running for president.  Also, it is the first time both candidates were born outside of the United States; Obama is from Hawaii and McCain is from the Panama Canal Zone.  If the Republican Party is to win, Sarah Palin will be the first female vice-president and John McCain will be the oldest first-term president.  And if the Democratic Party wins, Joe Biden will be the first Roman Catholic vice-president.

From what is shown here, and what has been seen and heard throughout these past month, this election is most definitely going to be remembered.

The Electoral College is a body of electors from each state whos votes decide who becomes president.  Every states number of electoral votes differ depending on the population of the state.  This map shows how many electoral votes each state of the U.S. has for the 2008 election:

How the Electoral College works to elect the president is fairly simple if understood like this:

On election day, citizens from from every state go and vote for who they would like to become president.  After the polls are closed, each state adds up their votes for all the candidates.  Whichever candidate has the most votes within the state wins that states electoral votes.  That is what is called “Winner Takes All.”  However many votes that state has, is how many votes go toward the electoral count for that candidate.  Only two states, Colorado and Massachusettes, are allowed to split their electoral votes.  The candidate who reaches 270 electoral votes win the presidency.

The candidate I would vote for would be John McCain.  For one reason, because my family and I are republicans and most of the things we stand for, McCain also stands for.  That honestly, would be the biggest reason, but i also like how he, like many others, put his life on the line by fighting for our country.  It shows his true patriotism for the U.S.  I think he is just more experienced and has great plans on how he is going to fix up our country and get it back to being healthy and strong again.

The reasons why I would not vote for Barack Obama are because of our differences, for one.  He believes things like abortion is okay, which I don’t support in any way.  I don’t appreciate the fact that he doesn’t put his hand on his heart when they pledge of allegiance is said.  I don’t trust that he is who we need in office to help us get out of our economic crisis.   But I do respect him for being so couragous as to being the first African American president nominee.

Proposal One states to making medical marijuana legal so it can be used to ease the pain for patients with serious illness.

Proposal Two proposes that stem cell research pf embryos should be legal.

If I was able to vote in this years election, I would vote no on Proposal One because I don’t think it would be right to allow it only for certain people.  In my mind, most people who use it already, use it to relieve the pain in their lives and to be happy, which would be the reason for allowing patients to use it.  So I think, even thougth the patients may be suffering in pain more, to me it still would seem hypocritical.  On Proposal Two, I would vote no, which originally wasn’t my first decision.  After I researched it more, i don’t think that it would be right to research on human embryos. That would just be the start.  It would most likely lead to researching on fetus’ from abortions and cloning.  I think we can find a better why to find cures.
